Frequently asked questions that may help you find what you're looking for.

What is a nanny camera?

Many people are confused by the term nanny camera, as most believe all nanny cameras allow you to view your footage live online. This is not the case. Nanny cams are cameras that are hidden in regular everyday household items, that you can place in your home to capture the day's activities of both your children and your nanny. NOT ALL Nanny cameras can be viewed online. Instead some record footage so that you can play it back and review it later.

Can I place a Nanny Cam on my child to supervise activities when they are not in my home?

It is possible but there are many dilemmas with this situation. For one... Hiding a device on a young child can be very difficult. Young children may play with the device and expose the camera. Now you may be considering a very small camera hidden in a button or a watch but it is important to note these devices have short battery lives of 1-2 hours which isn't usually effective for parents needing a camera that can record for a long period of time. Also it would be hard to capture footage from a device being worn by your child who would inevitably not point the camera in the right direction as they are unaware of its use. With older children and teenagers this may not be an issue as you may be able to reveal to them what you are trying to do.

That said... an alternative portable device like a teddy bear might prove to be more effective for younger children. A larger device like a teddy bear can conceal a much larger battery that is capable of recording longer. Still making sure the camera is facing the area you wish to record could be a problem if your child is carrying the item around with them. Due to laws regarding audio recording many manufacturers no longer include audio features on their devices. Because of this most Nanny cameras will not record audio. It is imperative that the nanny cam be directed toward the activity you are trying to capture, as you will not be able to hear what is going on in the event the camera is facing the ceiling.

Many parents find that audio recorders are more sufficient for this situation as they are able to hear the incidents that occur in their child's classroom or at their baby sitter's home. Most parents find they can adequately assess a situation without video. It is important however that you check your local laws regarding audio recording before using one of these devices. Many states do not allow the use of hidden audio recorders. There are some states however that offer exceptions to the rule. To avoid legal repercussions please make sure you confirm that your state allows such devices and that your intended use is acceptable.

There are so many choices. What type of Nanny Camera do I need?

Essentially there are two types of Nanny Cameras: Internet and Non-Internet

Internet Nanny Cams

Internet Nanny cams can be viewed live online from another location. Internet nanny cam units can vary in terms of setup. Below is a list of the different types of Internet Nanny cams and a brief explanation of how they work.

Streaming Nanny Cams

Streaming nanny camera units come with two parts; a camera and a receiver. The camera can be set up anywhere in your home and does NOT need to be connected to the receiver. The receiver plugs into a usb port on a computer within range of the camera (usually 50-300 feet depending on the unit). The camera transmits video to the receiver which relays that video to a program that is installed on your computer. The program allows you to set up "remote" viewing of your video, so that you can view live footage online. Recorded videos are stored on your computer. While you are able to view live footage online, recorded video can only be viewed from the computer the receiver is connected to. Ideally you would not want the nanny to have access to the computer the receiver is connected to as he/she may discover the recording program.

Direct to Router Nanny Cams

Direct to router nanny camera units come with two parts; a camera and a receiver. The camera can be set up anywhere in your home and does NOT need to be connected to the receiver. With this unit the receiver does NOT need to be connected to your computer. Instead the receiver connects directly to your router. The camera transmits the footage to the receiver. Recording takes place on an SD card that is hidden in the receiver. From the internet you are able to access the receiver directly and view both live and recorded footage online. You can even remotely delete recorded footage from the SD card. Because this unit does not connect to the computer, there is no need to worry someone will discover the device by using the computer.

Wifi Nanny Cams

Wi-Fi nanny camera units only require the camera. The camera needs to be set up within range of a wireless router with internet access and Wi-Fi capability. Wi-Fi cameras transmit video to the internet without the use of a receiver. You are able to view live footage online. Depending on the device you may or may not be able to record video.

3G or 4G Nanny Cams

3G or 4G nanny camera units only require the camera. There is no need for an internet connection. These cameras communicate wirelessly the same way an iPhone is able to access the internet through a 3G or 4G network. Video is transmitted online WITHOUT the use of a computer or router. Recording video will however require a computer and additional software which is usually included. It is important to note that these cameras require a cellular service, so there may be additional fees and charges for their use.

Non-Internet Nanny Cams

Self-Contained Nanny Cam (non-internet)

Self-contained nanny cameras record to an internal memory or SD card hidden inside the unit. Self-contained cameras do NOT need to be connected to any other device in order to record video. You can set this unit up anywhere. To retrieve video you would simply connect the device to your computer and download your footage. Some self-contained units may allow you to connect the device to your television, so you can play back your footage directly through your TV.

Wireless USB Nanny Cam (Non-Internet)

Wireless USB nanny cameras come with two parts; a camera and a receiver. The camera can be set up anywhere in your home within range of the receiver. The receiver connects directly to your computer. The camera transmits the footage to the receiver. The receiver relays the video to a program installed on your computer. Video recordings are stored on your hard drive for playback later. You can also view live footage directly from the computer as well. This unit is only designed to communicate with the computer the receiver is connected to. You will NOT be able to view footage online from another computer.

Wireless RCA Nanny Cam (Non-Internet)

Wireless RCA nanny cameras come with two parts; a camera and a receiver. The camera can be set up anywhere in your home within range of the receiver. The receiver connects directly to your television or VCR. You are able to view live footage from the television the receiver is connected to. Videos can be recorded to a VHS tape in your VCR.
